Farewell Hebrews, Part II

January 8, 1995
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 Heb 9:11-28;13:15,16

We’ll read Hebrews chap. 9:11-14. “When Christ came as high priest of the good things that are already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of this creation. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place (the real one) once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.

Farewell Hebrews, Part I

December 18, 1994
by  Rev. Steve Schlissel

Heb 9:11-28; 13:15,16

We’ll look at the ninth chapter, vss. 11-28, and then the 13th chapter, just a couple of verses from 15 to 16.

Heb 9:11-28. Pay careful attention. The reason I’ve selected this passage is that, as difficult as it is, it seemed to me that in this section here, we have covered the essence, and the heart, and the core of the message of the book, and consequently, this being a review of the book of Hebrews, we want to hear what the writer might have to say in a succinct fashion.

Let's Get Personal

December 11, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

HEB 13:20-25

As we come to our last exposition of this last text that we find in Hebrews we discover not surprisingly that a great deal could be said about the verses of our focus today. Verses 22-25. We dealt with the benediction last Lord’s Day. Of all might be said however I ask you to allow me to point out how once again, at the end of this great epistle, one of the most magnificent marks which distinguishes the Christian faith from all others comes flying to the fore. This is what strikes me as I read this passage.

Bene-diction/Bene-faction

Heb 13:14-21.

We begin our reading in verse 14.
*** prayer ***
This is verse 14 where we left off last week in Heb 13. Reading through the 21st verse. This is the Word of God:
14 For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.

Endurance and the Enduring City

 Heb 13:14-25

We’ll be reading from Hebrews the 13th chapter, from verse 14 to the end, and we picked #22 in the Psalter, it’s Psa 16, particularly because that is a psalm that has a very clear reference to the resurrection hope of the Old Testament saints that some people, for example, the Sadducees during the New Testament period had denied that there would be a resurrection.

The Priesthood of Believers

 Hebrews 13:7-19

Looking at the 13th chapter of Hebrews today by the grace of God as we continue to make progress in this book toward its completion. Our goal is that by the end of 1994 we would have completed our exegesis of the book, perhaps not our summary. That will take another year.

Outside the Camp, Part II

November 6, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 Heb 13:1-17

Hear, then, God’s Word. “Keep on loving each other as brothers. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering...

Outside the Camp, Part I

Heb 13:7-16

Here then, the Word of God from the 13th chapter of Hebrews. We begin at the 7th verse. “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Heb 13:7,8) Just what he was for them, he will be for you, and he will be for the covenant people for all generations.

Jewish Holidays Part IV: Low Holidays

September 18, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 HEB 13:9-16

Remember that the chapter and verses were written and the numbers were added only for convenience sake. In the original writing it was just simply a letter. And we can’t absorb it all at once. So we take it in chunks and try to understand it more fully so that it has a compound effect upon our hearts.

Contentment

July 3, 1994
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 13:5-6

Beloved in the Lord covetousness is a sin we tend not to notice. I want to mention that when I think of this subject at first you will think it is strange, but I think of Bea Hillis of blessed memory. Not because she was covetous. In fact she was the very opposite. She was the most content person we have ever known. She out the grace that stands against the sin that we will speak of. But I think of her because she used to say when she would recite the Ten Commandments, Thou shalt not covette. And would do all ten and when she got to the tenth she would say, Thou shalt not covet. And no matter how old she got that is the way she said it.

Marriage

June 26, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 Hebrews 13:4

Oh God, this is your word, and while we can determine the meaning of the words technically with a Lexicon and a dictionary, the spiritual import of them to be imparted to our hearts to become part of our being requires the work of the Holy Spirit and so we pray, oh Lord, that you would by your spirit make this word alive to us, that we would live and breath it, that we would hide your word in our hearts that we may not sin against you in order that you would be honored in the holiness of your people and that we would be a people apart ready to stand against every wind and every current and every flood of wickedness. Sustain us a strengthen us, we pray in Jesus name. Amen.

Strengthen the Things that Remain Part III

June 5, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 HEB 13:4

Now the context in which this verse is found is that as we have come through the main body of the book of Hebrews, warning against apostasy, turning away from the truth, we come to these things called concluding exhortations. But they are actually more than just arbitrary axioms or lists of rules thrown together.

Strengthen the Things That Remain Part II

May 8, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 HEB 13:1-10

We have called this sermon The Strengthening of things that Remain II dealing with marriage. We noticed before that the writer in chapter 12 concludes his formal structural part of his epistle by telling everybody that they must not return to those scaffolding elements of Judaism that are about to come down because the reality is here now.

Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin On

May 1, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 Heb 12:18-29

People who have lived through earthquakes report that it is something that you’ve got to feel to understand. The sensation of being entirely unsettled, lifted, and moved around with no sure place of security—this sensation creates a unique kind of dis-ease, even terror. Recently in California many of us have friends who have experienced it just this year. And in the past you may have spoken to people who have been in earthquakes, or heard them on the radio of television reports.

Strengthening the Things That Remain Part I

May 1, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 HEB 13:1-8

This is not a mother’s day sermon. We will look at the text of Hebrews in chapter 13 after having spent 12 chapters looking at the warnings of the writer. I still don’t think there is any persuasive reason to reject as the author although most contemporary evangelical and Reformed scholars do. But I think the fact that he is writing to Jews is enough to account for the differences in style and vocabulary that people say conclusively demonstrates wasn’t Paul.

The Seeing Circle

April 24, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 HEB 12:12-17

Now thus far in the book of Hebrews we have had many examples of persevering faith. The writer obviously wants us to know how important it is to stick with it and to stay in the faith once for all delivered. But now we are going to get an example or two of the flip side.

Be a Square Man

April 17, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 Heb 12:12-17

Our Scripture is found in the 12th chapter of the book of Hebrews. If you’ll turn to that now, we will read the verses 12-17. This text gives us occasion again to note that you should not put faith in the headings, you know.

Faith: What Is It? Part X: Faith For All Seasons

March 13, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 HEB 11:32-38

Last week we learned that the great majority of NT prophecies were fulfilled in the judgement that fell upon Jerusalem in the year of our Lord 70. The judgement upon the old order which had degenerated into a self righteous, a vicious and a hostile unbelief that had rejected Christ and had refused to repent and turn to the only hope, their salvation which was found in the Messiah.

Heroes Part III-Samuel, Samuel

January 23, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

HEB 11:32-40

While we saw that the writer is going on his list of the saints. And at verse 32 it is impressed upon his mind that he really doesn’t have time to tell them about all the great saints who have lived who would serve as examples for them in their current trying circumstances. And so he says, “And what more shall I say….

Heroes Part V - The Example of David

January 9, 1994
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 HEB 11:32-34

Today we are going to have a little bit of a combination. We are going to speak about the idea of example. And then we are going to see what we can learn by example from David. We mentioned last week that example is the supreme method of apostolic instruction.

The Feast of Dedication

December 12, 1993
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

HEB 11:32-38 John 10:22

When it says, “that they might gain a better resurrection” it means better than they would have gotten if they were released on the spot. That would be a sort of resurrection. They were condemned to die. And then they would be lifted from a condemnation by being given a pardon through capitulation.

Heroes Part I - Unlikely Heroes

December 5, 1993
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 HEB 11:32-34

In verse 32 our author reports that he didn’t have time to discuss a whole list of other saints whose faith stands as an example to the people to whom he was writing. He may not have had time to tell about them but we do. We are not bound by one letter.

Heroes. Part II, Moses

October 10, 1993
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

HEB 11:24-28

We talk today of Moses. The notions and conceptions surrounding the idea of holiness and the idea of sanctification, notions held by most of the American population including or even especially Christians, these notions are wooden, dull and boring.

Faith: What Is It? Part IX: Faith Chooses

September 5, 1993
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

HEB 11:24-28

Last week we left Moses in the bulrushes of the Nile River where the daughter of Pharaoh had discovered him, after his parents in faith had placed him there. They exercised their faith we said, through responding to a word from God.

Faith: What Is It? Part VIII: Fear & Faith

August 29, 1993
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

HEB 11:23

Now last week we had read about Isaac and Jacob and Joseph. This week go on a 200 years later in the covenant to verse 23. “By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born because they saw that he was no ordinary child. And they were not afraid of the king’s edict.”

Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Randy

August 22, 1993
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

HEB 11:20-22

The name of this sermon is, “Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Randy.” It is rather obvious from the title that this is a personalized sermon. We all know that this Lord’s Day we are sending our brother off to seminary in Orange City Iowa.

Father Abraham

June 20, 1993
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 11:8-19

We continue to look at Abraham as one of the most prominent members of the hall of faith. Surely more space is given to Abraham in this chapter regarding faith than any of the other saints.

Faith: What Is It? Part VII: By Faith Abraham…

June 13, 1993
by Rev Steve Schlissel

 HEB 11:8-19

Brothers and sisters in the Lord, there are people who call attention to a danger in reading the Bible and in doing exposition from it which is something called moralizing. They don’t want to see scripture stories made into little moralistic lessons.

Faith: What Is It? Part VI: Is Faith Blind?

June 6, 1993
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 11:8-19

Brothers and sisters in the Lord and people of God, we will spending a little bit of time talking about Abraham. He is set forth in Scripture as the model of faith. And since the Scripture everywhere speaks about faith as the essential, the constitutional element of what makes a Christian as opposed from everybody else it is worth our time and attention to look into his a little more closely.

Acceptable Offerings

April 18, 1993
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 11:4

Abel is a most instructive person in the Scripture. And he is the one who is called first in what will turn out to be a parade of saints. When the saints go marching in. Well they are marching here in chapter 11 and the writer of Hebrews is going to call upon many many saints in succession to bear witness to the necessity and the vitality of faith. The indispensability of faith, the power of faith.

Faith: What is It? Part IV: Faith Seeks

March 21, 1993
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 Heb 1:1-6

We’ve noted many times that this chapter is called the hall of faith in the Scriptures, a succession, a list, of one saint after another living a life of faith, and set forth as examples for us to consider, and ponder, and learn from. Faith is so preeminent in Scripture.

Faith: What Is It? Part III: Faith Works

March 14, 1993
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

(Neh 6:1-15)

There is a great deal to do in the church of Christ, and I think it’s appropriate for us to come regularly to the book of Nehemiah for direction, support, and encouragement in the projects that we undertake, in order that we might learn from him, and be inspired by his example.

Faith: What Is It? Part I: What It Is, What It Isn't

February 7, 1993
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

Heb 11:1-2

Let’s turn to Heb 11. This is what God says. “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commend for.” (Heb 11:1-2)

The Offering You Must Not Refuse

December 13, 1992
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 10:26-36

Now we have been in this letter to the Hebrews for some time. And if we have read it through ourselves at all at any point in our lives and/or paid close attention to preaching through this we recognize that this letter is a relentless, no holds barred, pastoral attempt, by any and all reasonable and biblical means, the apostasy that some Jewish Christians were contemplating.

Synagogue-ing

November 29, 1992
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 10:19-25

Now since our focus today will be on verses 24-25 I think that you should that while the sense is certainly conveyed here by the NIV, there are some liberties some might say, with the rendering from the Greek.

The New World Order, Part 5

November 1, 1992
by Rev Steve Schlissel

EPH 2:11-22

We are going to get to our texts in a moment. You know that occasionally we depart from the traditional order of reading first and then saying what this means. Let’s talk about the broader context of what we have been doing.

The New World Order, Part 4

October 25, 1992
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 10:19-25

We have been working our way through the book of Hebrews and we have come to the point where we have realized quite clearly that chapters 8-10 form the core of the book. The core is from the word for heart.

The New World Order, Part 3

October 18, 1992
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 10:1-18

We are in the tenth chapter of Hebrews now really dealing with section 8-10 which is the heart, the core, actually the climax of the argument that the writer of Hebrews is making. And this book is a very important book. And as he is coming to the conclusion of his argument, it is essential that we understand what that argument is. And so we are going to take some time today to try to get the bigger picture. Listen carefully to this Word and then let us apply ourselves to understand it.

The New World Order, Part 2

October 11, 1992
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 9:1-14

This argument of Hebrews is a tremendous argument. And it is of the greatest possible importance for the understanding of the Bible. One might almost say that if we didn’t have the book of Hebrews along with the EPH 2 perhaps, one would be hard pressed to know what the differences are between the OT and the NT in regard to the worship of God

The New World Order, Part 1

October 4, 1992
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 9:1-14

Well it seems as if after a long hiatus the Jewish observance of Yom Kippur has forced us back to the book of Hebrews. We do like to acknowledge the sequence of the Jewish calendar and see its significance fulfillment in Jesus Christ. And while we were going through the book of Hebrews we came to HEB 8 and believed that it was of such monumental nature in terms of exposition that we would give certain principles regarding the treatment that we see here of the new covenant.

You Need to Persevere

August 9, 1992
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

 Heb 10:32-36.

The Olympics, I think, are coming to a close today, and as usual the events have been peppered with stories of great courage and sometimes really thrilling activity.

Finish the Story

March 22, 1992
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 8:1-13, 10:11-18 And at this point the writer of Hebrews is now switching to move toward his conclusion. This is the end of a section. But we will continue for a few verses to verse 23.

Already/Not Yet

were written to Jews and Gentiles. Here he is speaking to Jews who are tempted to go back to Judaism, back to the shadows, back to the types. And they say that that accounts for the difference in style.

The New Covenant

March 8, 1992
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

Heb 8.

We come to the eighth chapter of Hebrews.
*** prayer ***
The apostle says, “8:1 The point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2 and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man. 3 Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.

Now You See It, Now You Don't

March 8, 1992
by Rev Steve Schlissel

 HEB 8

Now we have been working for some considerable time at trying to understand a very important question, the relationship of the OT and the NT. And I still think that that is the key to much of what the Bible has to say. You know, context is king

What's New

November 17, 1991
by Rev Steve Schlissel

Let us pray. Oh living God, we take your word so very seriously and we know that there are points in it that are difficult to understand and so now empty of any hope in ourselves to comprehend the breadth and depth of your word, we beg that the Holy Spirit himself, who authored these Scriptures, would give us insight today that we may walk away from here knowing you better, knowing your word better, having confusion that we have had cleared up and that we may be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. We pray with thanksgiving in his name, amen.

Jesus Meets Our Needs

January 13, 1991
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 7:26

Very important to know who to call when you have a problem. When there is something strange in the neighborhood, who are you going to call? If there is something weird and it don’t look good, who are you going to call? You have to know who to call.

The Perfect High Priest

November 11, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 6:19ff

As we noted last week this chapter begins the full development of the central argument in the epistle to the Hebrews. The book was almost certainly written to Jewish Christians who from the text appear to have been in danger of reverting back to a look, see, touch form of religion that was present in the old Levitical order of the priesthood.

Almost Christian

October 21, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 6:1-12

In his commentary on HEB at chapter 6:4-6 William Plummer wrote, We come now to a portion of this epistle which has perplexed and even distressed many. That we could be distressed is understandable. That we would be perplexed is not necessary.

Back to School

September 2, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 5:11-6:12 Read along in NIV

Our society is one that has been characterized as being in revolt against maturity. And this is certainly true. Everywhere in every sphere we see the exaltation of infantile behavior.

Our Great High Priest

by Rev Steve Schlissel

Hebrews 4:14ff (read). Thus the reading of God’s word. May the Lord grant us understanding.

If you attended carefully upon last week’s message and consider carefully the passage before us today, you will say Amen to Luther’s comment about these sections.

Open and Clothed

August 19, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

 HEB 4:12-16

Thus far in this chapter our author has proven to us that the Word of God spoken in Psalm 95, Today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, this Word is always relevant.

Heaven and Hell, Part II: No Rest

August 12, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 4:1-11

When we last spoke on this chapter we noted how the author is here stressing two ideas. The first is that there is a hope of entering God’s rest that is ever present.

Heaven and Hell, Part I

July 29, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

We will be reading from that portion of the Word, HEB 4:1-11.

Now a word from someone who did not write the Word of God. Perhaps you will recognize who the author is.

Do Not Harden Your Hearts

July 22, 1990
by Rev. Steve Schlissel

Heb. 3: 7-19

Turning to the third chapter of Hebrews, the Scripture will be from verse 7 to the end of the chapter. And before we read, as God’s covenant people we affirm our purpose in reading this word and in listening to it. There is a question in the larger catechism about how the Word of God is to be heard. We’ll get to that as we continue our studies. We won’t get to that question tonight. That’s way down the pike, but we’re studying the larger catechism at 6 o’clock each Lord’s Day evening at the parsonage right around the corner and you’re all invited to continue to attend.

Moses and Jesus

July 8, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 3:1-6

The relationship of Moses to Jesus is one of great significance. For here as we will encounter throughout the letter of Hebrews, the essence of the relationship between the old administration of the covenant and the new administration of the covenant will be found.

We are His House

May 20, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 3:1-6

The author of Hebrews continues to explain the relationship of the old and new covenants. The meaning of Christ’s accomplished works and particularly the meaning of this for Jewish believers. He comes now to a most important subject, the discussion of Moses and Jesus and their relationship to God’s house respectively.

Fix Your Thoughts

April 29, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 3:1

We are all familiar with the nursery rhyme that goes, Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men could not put Humpty together again.

Victory Through Suffering

April 22, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 2:14-18

Anyone who becomes a Christian in the hope of escaping suffering is soon disappointed. In our Lord’s famous parable of the wise and foolish builders, the essential difference was not in the distresses that each would face.

Kinsman Alive

March 18, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 2:1ff (read along)

Trusting that the Lord would give us insight and understanding we proceed to discuss this passage. Last week we considered the important passage in verse 2 of this chapter which affirms that the penalties of the law are just.

Just Punishment

March 11, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 2:1-4

Now I hope that what might be a joke in reading the sign doesn’t come true. It says that the sermon this week will be just punishment. I don’t think that is the spirit in which it was put up there.

Pay Careful Attention

HEB 2:1-4

While every word of God is pure and true. And every word is relevant when rightly understood, some words seem to be particularly relevant in a given generation.

An Anchor for Our Souls

February 28, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 6:9-20

The writer of Hebrews was about to discuss Melchizadek way back at 5:10-11 where he wrote that Jesus became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizadek.

The Lord of the Angels

February 25, 1990
by Rev Steve Schlissel

HEB 2:5ff (read along)
Now of course there are many remarkable sayings even in this brief passage. Is it true that God is mindful of us? Is it true that the Son of man is cared for by God? Somehow we have a hard time believing that.

The Angel of the Lord

Turn to the book of Hebrews 1:1-7, 13-14, In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets; but in these last days He has spoken to us by a Son, whom He appointed the heir of all things, through whom also He created the world. He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of His nature, upholding the universe by His word of power.

Today we begin our studies in the book of Hebrews. And we need some background information, just as we needed background information this morning as we began our study of the Second Helvetic Confession. Sometimes getting background information doesn’t seem terribly glamorous or exciting or especially challenging. But it is nevertheless necessary. So let us pay attention to this background and to this introductory material in order that as we go through this book we might have a foundation from which to proceed.
